Ashwin’s Lone Stand in a Collapse as England Cruise Past India in Group A Clash

India and England faced off in the 34th match of the ICC World Cup 2026 at Bay Oval, but the contest turned out to be a one-sided affair as England registered a commanding six-wicket victory with 4.2 overs to spare.

Batting first, India endured a disastrous start and never truly recovered. England’s pace attack exploited the early movement brilliantly, reducing India to 7 for 3 inside the opening overs. Rohit Sharma, Abhishek Sharma, and Virat Kohli were all dismissed cheaply, leaving the Indian innings in complete disarray. The pressure continued to mount as wickets fell in quick succession, and India slumped to 10 for 5, staring at the possibility of an extremely low total.

Amid the collapse, Ravichandran Ashwin produced a stunning counterattacking innings that briefly revived Indian hopes. Promoted up the order, Ashwin smashed 35 runs off just 11 balls, striking the ball cleanly and fearlessly against both pace and spin. His explosive cameo was the standout moment of the innings and helped India push past the 60-run mark. Shubman Gill provided minor support with a brisk 12, but once Ashwin fell, the tail offered little resistance. India were eventually bowled out for just 68 runs in 7.1 overs.

England’s bowling unit delivered a collective masterclass. Jofra Archer led the charge with a fiery spell, claiming three wickets while conceding only four runs. Chris Woakes and Moeen Ali chipped in with two wickets each, while Mark Wood’s pace ensured India never settled at the crease. The disciplined and aggressive bowling display set up an uncomplicated chase.

In reply, England lost a couple of early wickets but never looked under pressure given the modest target. Jos Buttler and Jonny Bairstow departed cheaply, offering India a fleeting glimmer of hope. However, Dawid Malan quickly shut the door with a blistering 25 off just seven deliveries, dismantling the Indian bowling attack with ease. Ollie Pope and Harry Brook finished the job calmly, guiding England to 72 for 4 in 5.4 overs.

Despite ending on the losing side, Ravichandran Ashwin was named Man of the Match for his outstanding all-round effort, contributing both with the bat and ball. England’s emphatic win strengthened their position in Group A, while India were left with serious questions to answer after a batting collapse of historic proportions and possibly out of the semis race now.
