The third match of the South Africa tour of New Zealand at Hagley Oval marked a complete turnaround in the series, as South Africa delivered a dominant all-round performance to secure a massive 82-run victory and keep the contest alive.

After losing the toss, South Africa were put into bat but suffered an early setback when Quinton de Kock fell for a duck on the very first ball. However, the innings quickly gained momentum thanks to a breathtaking counterattack from Tristan Stubbs, who smashed 38 off just 12 balls, taking the New Zealand bowlers by surprise.

Despite losing wickets at regular intervals, South Africa kept the scoring rate high. Ryan Rickelton anchored the innings brilliantly with a composed and explosive unbeaten 46 off 25 balls. His knock ensured stability while allowing others to play freely around him. Contributions from Temba Bavuma (12 off 4) and Marco Jansen (10 off 3) added valuable late runs, pushing South Africa to a formidable total of 135 for 9 in their 10 overs.

New Zealand’s bowlers struggled to contain the flow of runs, although Matt Henry stood out with three wickets. Will O'Rourke and Rachin Ravindra chipped in with two wickets each, but the damage had already been done.

Chasing a daunting 136, New Zealand needed a strong start, and Finn Allen provided just that with a blistering 16 off 4 balls. However, his early dismissal triggered a dramatic collapse.

South Africa’s bowlers completely dominated the chase, led by a sensational spell from Simon Harmer, who picked up four wickets in a brilliant display of control and variation. Keshav Maharaj complemented him perfectly, also claiming four wickets and dismantling the middle and lower order.

Despite a quick cameo from Daryl Mitchell (16 off 4), New Zealand had no answers to the relentless bowling attack. Wickets fell in rapid succession, and the hosts were bundled out for just 53 runs in 4.3 overs.
