Nasum’s Six-Wicket Storm Ends Bangladesh’s Campaign on a High

The final league match of Asia Cup 2026 delivered fireworks, drama, and a remarkable individual performance as Bangladesh defeated Afghanistan by 16 runs at the Multan Cricket Stadium. Although the victory was not enough to secure a place in the final due to an inferior net run rate, Bangladesh finished their campaign with six points and plenty of pride after producing one of their most complete performances of the tournament.

The star of the evening was Nasum Ahmed, whose sensational six-wicket haul destroyed Afghanistan's middle order and earned him the Player of the Match award.

Coming into the match, Bangladesh knew they needed a massive victory to have any chance of overtaking Pakistan's superior net run rate. The Tigers responded positively after being asked to bat first, posting a competitive total of 145/7 in their allotted ten overs.

Tanzid Hasan once again provided a blazing start, smashing 18 runs from just six deliveries. However, Bangladesh soon found themselves under pressure after losing Parvez Hossain Emon and Litton Das in quick succession, slipping to 18/2.

Saif Hassan steadied the innings with a valuable 21 from 11 balls, while Towhid Hridoy contributed an aggressive 17 from only six deliveries. Bangladesh appeared to be building momentum before Afghanistan's experienced spin duo of Rashid Khan and Mohammad Nabi struck crucial blows in the middle overs.

At 72/6, Bangladesh were in danger of wasting another promising start.

That was when Afif Hossain stepped up with one of the finest innings of his tournament. The left-hander played a mature yet explosive knock, remaining unbeaten on 40 from just 17 deliveries. His innings featured four boundaries and four sixes and ensured Bangladesh maintained a healthy scoring rate through the closing overs.

Taskin Ahmed then provided the finishing flourish. Continuing his impressive tournament, the all-rounder blasted 29 runs from only 10 balls, striking four boundaries and two sixes. The partnership between Afif and Taskin completely changed the complexion of the innings and lifted Bangladesh to a challenging total of 145/7.

Afghanistan's bowlers shared the wickets around, with Rashid Khan, Mohammad Nabi, and Naveen-ul-Haq picking up two wickets each. However, their inability to contain Afif and Taskin during the death overs proved costly.

Chasing 146, Afghanistan launched an explosive assault.

Rahmanullah Gurbaz wasted no time, smashing 22 runs from just five balls, while Ibrahim Zadran matched him with another rapid 22 from six deliveries. The pair powered Afghanistan to 51 runs inside the opening two wickets and briefly put Bangladesh's qualification hopes under serious pressure.

Just as Afghanistan appeared to be taking control, Bangladesh found their hero.

Nasum Ahmed entered the attack and completely transformed the match. The left-arm spinner first removed Sediqullah Atal before dismissing Darwish Rasooli and Azmatullah Omarzai in quick succession. Moments later, he accounted for Mohammad Nabi, Mujeeb Ur Rahman, and Fazalhaq Farooqi to complete an astonishing six-wicket haul.

Afghanistan collapsed from a strong position into complete chaos as Nasum ripped through the middle and lower order.

Rashid Khan attempted one final rescue mission, smashing an unbeaten 32 from only 10 deliveries with three fours and three sixes. Naveen-ul-Haq also contributed a quick 15 from six balls, but the target had become too steep after the collapse.

Afghanistan were eventually bowled out for 129 in 7.1 overs, handing Bangladesh a deserved 16-run victory.
