Mulder and Shamsi Seal the Series as South Africa Clinch Thriller at Newlands

South Africa secured the African Friendship Series with a match to spare after defeating Zimbabwe by six wickets in the second T10 international at Newlands Cricket Ground. An outstanding all-round performance from Wiaan Mulder, combined with a devastating five-wicket haul by Tabraiz Shamsi, helped the hosts wrap up the chase with 10 balls to spare and take an unassailable 2-0 lead in the three-match series.

After winning the toss, Zimbabwe looked to build on the positives from the opening match but suffered an early collapse against South Africa's disciplined bowling attack. Craig Ervine provided a brisk start with 21 off 11 balls, while Sean Williams struck two boundaries during his quick 8 from 3 deliveries. However, the innings quickly unraveled as wickets fell in rapid succession.

The turning point came when Wiaan Mulder struck three times in his two-over spell. He trapped Ervine leg before, dismissed Sean Williams, and removed Brad Evans for a duck to leave Zimbabwe reeling at 44 for 5. The middle order failed to recover as South Africa maintained relentless pressure.

Zimbabwe captain Sikandar Raza briefly counterattacked with 16 from just 4 balls, including two towering sixes, but his innings was cut short by Tabraiz Shamsi. From there, the left-arm wrist spinner dominated the closing stages, claiming five wickets for 30 runs. Shamsi dismissed Raza before cleaning up Innocent Kaia, Blessing Muzarabani, Tendai Chatara, and Wellington Masakadza to complete an outstanding five-wicket haul.

Only Luke Jongwe offered meaningful resistance for Zimbabwe. Batting with the lower order, he remained unbeaten on 37 from 15 balls, striking four sixes and three boundaries to lift Zimbabwe to 117 all out in 9 overs after they had slumped to 44 for 5.

South Africa's bowling attack worked brilliantly as a unit. Mulder finished with 3 for 24, Corbin Bosch claimed 2 for 15, while Shamsi's five wickets ensured Zimbabwe never built lasting partnerships.

Chasing a modest target of 118, South Africa attacked from the outset despite losing Tony de Zorzi early without scoring. Quinton de Kock immediately shifted the momentum with a breathtaking 37 off only 11 balls, smashing four sixes and three boundaries to put Zimbabwe's bowlers under immense pressure.

Following de Kock's dismissal, Wiaan Mulder continued his outstanding form from the opening match, blasting 30 from just 11 deliveries with four sixes before Wellington Masakadza dismissed him. Zimbabwe briefly fought back through Tendai Chatara, who removed both openers, and Masakadza, who claimed Mulder, reducing South Africa to 78 for 3.

However, the experienced pair of Temba Bavuma and Reeza Hendricks ensured there would be no late drama. Bavuma remained unbeaten on 20 from 9 balls, while Hendricks finished with 14 not out from 7 deliveries, calmly guiding South Africa to 118 for 4 in 8.2 overs and sealing victory with 1.4 overs remaining.

Zimbabwe's bowlers showed more discipline than in the series opener. Tendai Chatara picked up 2 wickets, while Wellington Masakadza also claimed a wicket. Despite those breakthroughs, the modest target left little room for error, and South Africa's powerful batting lineup comfortably completed the chase.

For the second consecutive match, Wiaan Mulder was named Player of the Match after delivering another exceptional all-round performance. His crucial 30 off 11 balls and match-defining figures of 3 for 24 once again highlighted his value in both departments. Meanwhile, Tabraiz Shamsi's five-wicket haul was the standout bowling performance of the contest and played a decisive role in dismantling Zimbabwe's innings.

With consecutive victories, South Africa have already secured the inaugural African Friendship Series. Zimbabwe will now aim to finish the tour on a positive note in the final match, while South Africa will look to complete a clean sweep and extend their unbeaten run in dominant fashion.
