Little’s Lightning Spell Stuns England as Ireland Claim Historic Opening Victory in Unity Series
Ireland made a dream start to the inaugural England-Ireland Unity Series, defeating England by 23 runs in a thrilling opening T10 clash at The Kia Oval on July 4. After posting a competitive 119/6, the Irish bowlers, led by the sensational Joshua Little, dismantled England's powerful batting lineup to secure a memorable victory and take a 1-0 lead in the three-match series.
Winning the toss and batting first, Ireland endured a nightmare beginning as they slipped to 6/2 inside the opening over. However, captain Paul Stirling counterattacked in trademark fashion, smashing 44 off just 23 balls, including six towering sixes, to immediately shift the momentum. His aggressive innings revived Ireland after the early setbacks and laid the platform for a fighting total.
Once Stirling departed, Harry Tector contributed a valuable 25 from 17 deliveries, while Curtis Campher provided the late fireworks with a blistering 17 off only 6 balls at a strike rate above 280. Useful unbeaten cameos from Neil Rock and Mark Adair helped Ireland finish strongly on 119/6, a competitive score in the 10-over format.
England's bowling attack had mixed fortunes. Jofra Archer was outstanding, returning remarkable figures of 3/9 from his two overs, regularly troubling the Irish batters with his pace and accuracy. Adil Rashid claimed two wickets, while Mark Wood chipped in with one, but the remaining bowlers struggled to contain Ireland's middle-order acceleration.
England's chase began brightly as Phil Salt launched an aggressive assault, scoring 37 off 18 balls, while Harry Brook kept the required rate under control with an entertaining 33 from 19 deliveries. At one stage, England appeared well placed to hunt down the target.
The turning point came through Ireland's exceptional bowling and fielding. Curtis Campher struck first by dismissing Salt, before Matthew Humphreys removed Jacob Bethell to expose England's middle order. Two crucial run-outs of Harry Brook and Jos Buttler completely shifted the momentum in Ireland's favour.
Then came the decisive spell from Joshua Little. The left-arm pacer produced a match-winning burst, dismissing Tom Banton, Liam Livingstone, and Mark Wood, finishing with outstanding figures of 3 wickets for just 16 runs in his two overs. England collapsed dramatically from 95/3 to 96/7, failing to recover as Ireland completed a convincing 23-run victory.
Little's brilliant bowling earned him the Player of the Match award, while Ireland's disciplined performance highlighted contributions from every department. Stirling's explosive innings, Campher's all-round display, the sharp fielding, and Little's finishing spell combined to hand Ireland one of their finest T10 victories over England.
The result gives Ireland a 1-0 advantage in the three-match Unity Series, while England will need to regroup quickly if they hope to level the series in the second match.
