Impact Points

Impact Points are a measure of a player’s contribution to a match, taking into account not only the quantity of runs scored or wickets taken, but also the efficiency with which these contributions were made. This allows us to fairly evaluate both specialists and all-rounders.

How Impact Points Are Calculated

The calculation considers both batting and bowling contributions.

1. Batting Impact

Batting impact measures how much a player contributed to the team’s total runs, adjusted by how quickly they scored.

  1. Run Contribution:
    Batting Share (%) = (Player Runs / Team Runs) * 100
  2. Strike Rate Efficiency:
Player Strike Rate = (Player Runs / Balls Faced) * 100
Team Strike Rate = (Team Runs / Total Team Balls) * 100
  3. Adjusted Batting Impact:
Batting Impact = Batting Share * (Player Strike Rate / Team Strike Rate)

⚡ This ensures that scoring runs quickly (high strike rate) gives more impact than scoring slowly.

2. Bowling Impact

Bowling impact measures how much a player contributed to taking team wickets, adjusted for how economically they bowled.

  1. Wicket Contribution:
    Bowling Share (%) = (Player Wickets / Team Wickets) * 100
  2. Economy Efficiency:
Player Economy = Runs Conceded / Overs Bowled
Team Economy = Total Team Runs Conceded / Total Team Overs Bowled
  3. Adjusted Bowling Impact:
Bowling Impact = Bowling Share * (Team Economy / Player Economy)

⚡ This rewards bowlers who take wickets efficiently while conceding fewer runs.

3. Total Impact Points

Finally, the total impact of a player in a match is simply the sum of batting and bowling impact:

Total Impact = Batting Impact + Bowling Impact

Key Advantages

  • Fair to All Roles: All-rounders, specialists, and part-time bowlers/batsmen can all be evaluated fairly.
  • Efficiency Matters: Fast scoring or economical bowling increases impact.
  • Relative Contribution: The calculation considers the player’s contribution relative to the team, not just raw stats.

This approach ensures that Impact Points reflect not just performance, but how significant that performance was in the context of the match.
