Lahore Last-Ball Heist: Pakistan Edge India in a T10 Classic for the Ages
The biggest rivalry in cricket delivered another unforgettable chapter as Pakistan defeated India by one wicket in a breathtaking Asia Cup 2026 thriller at Gaddafi Stadium, Lahore. In a match packed with momentum swings, explosive batting, dramatic collapses, and nerve-shredding finishing moments, Pakistan chased down 152 with five balls remaining to hand India their first defeat of the tournament.
Although Pakistan emerged victorious, the match belonged to Tilak Varma, whose sensational 69 off 21 balls earned him the Player of the Match award despite ending on the losing side.
India's innings got off to a shaky start after Sanju Samson was run out without facing a ball. The pressure increased when Ishan Kishan departed for a first-ball duck, leaving India struggling at 26/2.
Abhishek Sharma once again shouldered the responsibility at the top of the order. The in-form opener struck 44 runs from 25 deliveries, smashing six fours and three sixes while holding the innings together. Suryakumar Yadav briefly ignited the scoring rate with a blistering 17 from just five balls before Naseem Shah ended his cameo.
At 45/3, India needed something special, and Tilak Varma delivered exactly that.
The young left-hander produced one of the finest innings of the tournament, taking apart Pakistan's bowling attack with fearless strokeplay. He launched ten massive sixes and two boundaries on his way to a breathtaking 69 from only 21 deliveries. His innings transformed India's fortunes and lifted them toward a competitive total when a much lower score seemed likely.
Pakistan fought back brilliantly in the closing stages. Shadab Khan claimed the crucial wickets of Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma, while Faheem Ashraf delivered another outstanding all-round performance with figures of 3/26. Salman Mirza and Naseem Shah also chipped in with important wickets as India finished on 151/8 from their 10 overs.
Chasing 152, Pakistan suffered the worst possible start.
Jasprit Bumrah struck twice inside the opening over, dismissing Saim Ayub and Fakhar Zaman to leave Pakistan reeling at 7/2. When Ravichandran Ashwin removed Salman Ali Agha and Varun Chakravarthy dismissed the dangerous Usman Khan, Pakistan found themselves under immense pressure at 70/4.
However, the hosts refused to surrender.
Sahibzada Farhan provided a solid platform with 21 from 13 balls, while Mohammad Nawaz played a sensational counterattacking innings. The left-handed all-rounder smashed 30 runs from just seven deliveries, striking three fours and three sixes to bring Pakistan roaring back into the contest.
The game swung once again when Hardik Pandya removed both Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz in quick succession. Soon after, Shivam Dube dismissed Faheem Ashraf and Naseem Shah, reducing Pakistan to 147/9 and leaving India just one wicket away from victory.
With six runs still required and only one wicket in hand, the match appeared destined for India.
But Mohammad Wasim had other ideas.
The Pakistani lower-order batter produced a fearless finishing act, smashing an unbeaten 33 from only eight balls. His innings included two boundaries and four sixes, with every run coming under immense pressure. Alongside Salman Mirza, he guided Pakistan across the finish line and completed one of the most dramatic run chases in Asia Cup history.
Pakistan eventually reached 153/9 in 9.1 overs, sealing a famous one-wicket victory and igniting celebrations among the Lahore crowd.
India's bowlers fought hard throughout the chase. Shivam Dube finished with three wickets, while Hardik Pandya and Jasprit Bumrah claimed two each. Yet despite reducing Pakistan to nine wickets down, they could not prevent the final flourish from Mohammad Wasim.
