Spin Storm in Pallekele: Sri Lanka Edge Past Ireland in Chaotic Series Opener
The opening match of the three-game series between Sri Lanka and Ireland at Pallekele International Cricket Stadium delivered a dramatic low-scoring contest, dominated by spin and frequent momentum shifts. Sri Lanka eventually emerged victorious, securing a three-wicket win with 2.5 overs remaining, but not without a scare.
Ireland, batting first, endured a torrid start and were bundled out for just 53 runs in 7 overs. Early wickets fell rapidly as Sri Lanka’s bowlers exploited the surface brilliantly. Despite the collapse, Ireland showed brief flashes of intent through Harry Tector (18 off 7 balls) and George Ross Adair (14 off 6 balls), both striking at over 200. However, their resistance was short-lived.
Sri Lanka’s bowling attack was led by Maheesh Theekshana, who claimed 3 wickets, while Wanindu Hasaranga delivered a sensational spell, conceding no runs and taking 2 wickets in his lone over. Support came from Eshan Malinga, who also picked up two key wickets to complete Ireland’s collapse.
Chasing a modest target of 54, Sri Lanka surprisingly found themselves under pressure as Ireland’s bowlers fought back strongly. Joshua Little and Barry McCarthy struck early, removing top-order batters and triggering a mini-collapse that left Sri Lanka reeling at 48 for 7.
The turning point came when Sri Lanka’s captain Dasun Shanaka held his nerve, finishing unbeaten on 8 off 5 balls, guiding his side home. Although wickets continued to tumble, Sri Lanka managed to scrape past the finish line, highlighting both Ireland’s fighting spirit and Sri Lanka’s composure under pressure.
For his all-round impact—4 runs off 3 balls and a match-defining bowling performance—Wanindu Hasaranga was deservedly named Man of the Match.
While Sri Lanka take a 1–0 lead in the series, the narrow margin and Ireland’s spirited bowling effort promise a fiercely contested remainder of the tour.

Post-Match Remarks
“ Our strategy was to bat first and try to score a good total. However, the toss was not in our favor, so we changed our plan to focus on bowling. Bringing a spinner after the powerplay was a good decision, as we sensed that the pitch suited spinners. We attempted most of the slow balls, which helped us to all-out Irish team at minimum total. During batting, we tried to play grounded shots, but the Irish spin bowlers worked well and we were losing wickets constantly. Before it was too late, we tried some loft shots, which were effective. This is not a good win, but we are happy that we learned a few tricks that will help us in future matches.
